World of Warships Fan? World of Sea Battle Takes Naval Combat Back to the Age of Sail, Free
Swap battleship guns for cannon broadsides and match lobbies for a persistent open sea. World of Sea Battle is the age-of-sail MMO many naval fans have been waiting for.
World of Warships proved that naval combat can be one of the most satisfying things in PC gaming: angling your armour, leading your shots and watching a perfect salvo land. World of Sea Battle brings that same tactical pleasure back three centuries, to the Golden Age of Sail, and puts it in a persistent open world instead of 15-minute matches.
It is free to play on Steam, where it has been in Early Access since 21 October 2025, developed by Thera Interactive.
What is World of Sea Battle?
An open-world naval MMO where you start with a modest schooner and work your way up to massive ships of the line. According to the developers:
- 50+ historical ships, from schooners and brigantines to frigates and galleons, all upgradable and customizable;
- PvP and PvE naval battles with different ammunition types: round shot, heated shot, chain shot and more;
- a player-driven economy: trade, production chains, transport, fishing or raiding merchant ships;
- private islands that you can buy and develop into outposts;
- territorial guild wars for control of the archipelago, plus the uncharted Endless Sea beyond the map’s edge.
The archipelago runs from tropical islands to icy northern waters. (Steam screenshot)
Why World of Warships players will feel at home
Positioning and angles win fights. As in WoWS, you don’t win a naval battle by clicking fastest. You win it by being where the enemy can’t hit back. Broadsides make that even more important: your ship only fights well side-on.
Ammo choice matters. Round shot for hull damage, chain shot to cripple sails: it is the age-of-sail version of choosing between AP and HE.

A long ship progression. Unlocking and upgrading bigger ships is the backbone of the game, just like climbing the WoWS tech tree.

What is different, and why it is exciting
- A persistent world, not a match lobby. You sail an open sea where encounters happen naturally, and what you lose or win carries over.
- Business is a real path. You can become rich through trade and production without ever firing a cannon, or fund your fleet by raiding those who do.
- Guilds shape the map. Territorial wars give fights a real reason beyond the leaderboard.

Remember it is still Early Access: expect balance changes, missing features and the occasional rough edge.

Your first evening: how to start well
- Install World of Sea Battle for free. It takes a few minutes on Steam.
- Don’t rush into PvP. Learn wind, turning and broadside timing against AI ships first.
- Try trading early. A few profitable trade runs fund your next ship faster than fighting.
- Upgrade one ship well rather than buying a bigger one you can’t equip.
- Find a guild. Solo sailing is possible, but guilds get protection, shared goals and the big battles.
Who it is for, and who should skip it
Try it if you love naval combat, you like historical settings, or you have always wanted a sandbox where trade and war both matter.
Skip it if you want quick, arcade 15-minute matches (World of Warships still does that best) or if Early Access roughness puts you off.
PC requirements
Very modest: 64-bit Windows 8 or newer, a Core i5-4570-class processor and a GeForce GTX 460 (1 GB) or equivalent are listed as the minimum on Steam.
Our take
World of Sea Battle is what happens when you take World of Warships’ love of naval tactics and drop it into a living age-of-sail sandbox. It is still growing, but it is free, it runs on almost anything, and few games let you live out the full captain fantasy from trader to admiral. Take the helm for free and see how far you can sail.
