Miss Mass Effect? Foundation: Galactic Frontier Puts You in Command of a Ship and a Squad, Free
A crew of misfits, a ship that feels like home and squad firefights on alien worlds. If that sounds like Mass Effect, it is the best reason to try this licensed Foundation game.
What made Mass Effect unforgettable was not only the shooting. It was the Normandy: a ship that felt like home, a crew of strange companions you got attached to, and the feeling that you were steering the fate of the galaxy one mission at a time.
Foundation: Galactic Frontier chases that same feeling in a very different package. It is an officially licensed game set in Isaac Asimov’s Foundation universe, the one behind the Apple TV+ series. You build your own mothership, recruit a crew of oddballs, fight squad-based third-person firefights on alien planets and take part in big fleet wars. It is free to play on PC.
What is Foundation: Galactic Frontier?
Developed and published by FunPlus, it launched on PC and mobile on 21 October 2025, then arrived on Steam in 2026. It mixes several genres:
- Story RPG. As the Galactic Empire collapses, you play an interstellar trader, bounty hunter and political schemer moving between the Empire, the Foundation and rebel factions, uncovering Seldon’s Plan and facing the mysterious Mule.
- Ship building. Your mothership is a base you design cabin by cabin: food, water recyclers, steel production, and the guns to defend it.
- Squad shooting. Planetside, you fight with a three-hero team picked from 15+ characters. The classic tank, damage and healer trio is back.
- Fleet strategy. At the galactic scale, you build a trade empire and fight fleet wars against rivals.

Why Mass Effect fans will feel at home
Your ship is your home. Like the Normandy, your mothership is where your crew lives, and the game leans into it: you greet your crew, deal with onboard emergencies and slowly build bonds.
A crew of misfits. The official roster includes a robot with encyclopedic knowledge who doesn’t get sarcasm, a legendary space cowboy and one of the most wanted criminals in the galaxy. If you loved recruiting Garrus, Wrex and company, this is the same idea.
Three-person squad combat. Mass Effect is built on you plus two companions. Foundation’s three-hero strike teams work the same way, with roles that need to complement each other.
A galaxy in crisis. The fall of an empire, rival factions, a looming threat: the story setup feels very familiar.
What is different
Be clear about what this is: Foundation: Galactic Frontier is a free-to-play strategy/RPG hybrid, not a 40-hour single-player epic. The squad combat is faster and more arcade, and the long-term game is about growing your ship, crew and trade empire with other players. Think “Mass Effect’s crew and ship fantasy, wrapped in a live strategy game”. It is not Mass Effect 4.

Your first evening: how to start well
- Install it with the button below. It’s free.
- Follow the story at the start. It introduces the ship, the crew and the combat in a sensible order.
- Build a balanced trio. Tank, damage and healer will carry you much further than three damage dealers.
- Never leave your ship idle. Keep production cabins working, even when you log off.
- Join an alliance. Fleet wars and trade routes are much easier with allies.
Who it is for, and who should skip it
Try it if you love sci-fi crews and spaceship life, you enjoyed the Apple TV+ show or the books, or you want a sci-fi game that mixes shooting with strategy.
Skip it if you want a pure, premium single-player story RPG, or if free-to-play progression and an in-game shop are deal-breakers for you.
PC requirements
The Steam listing is very light: 64-bit Windows 7 SP1 or later, 4 GB of RAM and a GeForce GTX 460-class graphics card at minimum. Almost any gaming PC from the last decade will run it.
Our take
Nothing replaces Mass Effect. But if what you miss is the ship, the crew and the galaxy at stake, Foundation: Galactic Frontier delivers a surprising amount of it, for free, in one of the most famous sci-fi universes ever written.
