Project Entropy is a free-to-play sci-fi strategy MMO from FunPlus, played on the Steam desktop client, that blends base building, fleet command and large-scale alliance warfare in a shared persistent galaxy. Released in 2024, it has the familiar shape of a strategy MMO: a base you upgrade, a research tree, ships you collect and enhance, and an open map where alliances fight over territory. This guide gets your first week pointed the right way.

Some numbers and feature names change with updates, so treat the specifics you see in menus as current-patch and check them in-client.

Before you start

  • Play on the desktop client for the clearer map view and easier queue management.
  • Do not spend premium currency on anything before you understand the economy; save it for speedups or key ships.
  • Do not roam far from safe space early; your starting fleet is fragile.
  • Keep every hero ship you unlock; do not dismantle anything rare.
  • Line up your next build and research before every logout.

Step 1: Ride the guided objectives

The early game hands you a chain of objectives that double as a tutorial. Follow it. It walks you through unlocking production buildings, your first research, fleet slots and the systems that matter, in an order that avoids dead ends. Chasing whatever looks interesting instead usually leaves you missing a prerequisite. Once the guided chain thins out, you will have enough context to set your own priorities.

The objective rewards are also front-loaded generously: resources, speed-ups, ship parts and premium currency that are worth far more now than the trickle you get later. Clear every guided step you can, and collect the daily and login rewards from day one, because that early stockpile is what lets you upgrade at a comfortable pace instead of stalling.

Step 2: Build a small hero fleet, not a big one

Your combat power comes from hero ships, each with its own abilities and stats. The instinct to level all of them is a trap: your upgrade materials are limited and spread thin they leave you with a fleet of weak ships. Pick a compact group — enough to fill your active fleet slots with a mix of damage, durability and a support or utility ship — and pour enhancements, levels and gear into those. Expand only when your core is solidly ahead of the content you are facing.

Step 3: Keep the economy running

Behind the fleet is an economy of resource production, construction and research. This is your real rate of progress, and it only works if the queues are never idle. Every time you finish a session, make sure a building is upgrading, the lab has a project, and production is set to what you are short on. Prioritise research and buildings that raise resource output and fleet capacity first; the flashy combat upgrades matter more once your economy can sustain them.

Step 4: Join an active alliance now

Project Entropy is built around alliances. They provide help functions that speed your timers, shared and defended territory, group content, and — on the open map — the difference between being protected and being farmed by bigger players. Alliance wars on the map can involve very large numbers of players, and you want to be inside one of those groups, not caught between them. Join an alliance that is active in chat and coordinates, and contribute to its goals even while you are small.

Step 5: Pick your fights

Until your hero fleet is genuinely strong, treat PvP as optional. Farm PvE targets, events and the campaign for materials and currency, stay within reach of allied space, and keep your fleet home or escorted when you are offline. When you do engage other players, do it with alliance support and a target you have scouted, not on impulse.

Watch your shield or protection status before every logout. Getting your fleet caught undocked and undefended overnight can cost you days of resources, and a single bad raid early on demoralises more new players than a hard PvE fight ever does. Rebuilding is always possible, but avoiding the loss is cheaper.

Step 6: Spend premium currency on time, not vanity

If you spend anything, spend it on build and research speed-ups, an extra construction queue if the game offers one, or a well-reviewed starter ship bundle that fits your fleet plan. Cosmetics and impulse pulls do nothing for your progression curve. The core value in a strategy MMO like this is compressing timers, so that is where premium currency earns its keep.

Key takeaways

  • Project Entropy is a persistent strategy MMO; an active alliance is the core of progressing well.
  • Follow the guided objectives early — they route you through unlocks in a sensible order.
  • Concentrate upgrades on a small hero-ship fleet instead of leveling everything.
  • Keep construction, research and production queues busy whenever you log off.
  • Stay near allied space and avoid picking fights until your fleet can back them up.
